The University and the School of Optometry, with the generous support of Vision Service Plan, have established the Optometric Private Practice Institute to provide a center for the collection and dissemination of information to aid individuals in private practice deal with the daily challenges of management and operation of the small businesses which are private practices.

In addition to the collection and dissemination of data related to successful optometric private practice, OPPI provides tools to assist the private practitioner and those interested in private practice, in determining fees, practice values, practice purchase, practice potential, and ownership transition models which encourage and enable the successful continuation and enhancement of private practice optometry.  Included in what OPPI will provide is education in human resource management, general business management, and application of current treatment coding for billing in the current third party payer environment.

OPPI coordinates a collaborative effort to pursue the preceding objectives by involving the resources of the University of California in Business, Public Policy and Public Health, the expertise of successful private practitioners of optometry, and the knowledge base of consultants to health care practitioners.
